Jahorina is also one of the four Olympian mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina where the the 14th winter Olympics in 1984 were held. Of course it was that time when this mountain experienced the biggest boom and the country was pretty much in everyones mouth. Mountain Jahorina hosted the women's alpine skiing events of the 1984 Winter Olympics. While it is relatively close to home (only a 3 hour drive from Mostar) I never visited until recently. Fresh snow fell the night before and we arrived to a true winter wonderland. In this first post I want to show you the lonely sights of forests and plains here, while the second part will be more about the main tourist hubs, ski stations and Olympic festivities.
This is a two-part travel series:
Jahorina Olympic Ski Resort is the biggest and most popular ski resort in Bosnia and Herzegovina and offers a variety of outdoor sports and activities. It is primarily a destination for alpine skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and sledding, with over 40 km (25 mi) of ski slopes and modern facilities. You will see more of it in the second part.
There was a lot of activity on the slopes this day which didn't come as a surprise. There is a small parking fee you have to pay when you enter the resort and you can park for the whole day.
There is nothing better then blue winter skies and fresh fallen snow. Add to that the wonderful sun and fresh air and your time in the mountains can't be better. We enjoyed our walk and I enjoyed taking these pictures, since at every corner there is something to see. From lonely cottages and isolated slopes to big sweeping landscapes and frozen forests.
Behind the next curve a truly wonderful sights of the valley and many many tourists would await us. More on that in the next and final part on Friday.
End of Part One
To be continued...
