It feels like I’m doing a road trip to the United States every year, but in fact in the last nine years we made four big road trips and now for this year, we have planned the fifth one. There is so much to see in so much to do in the United States that we are always looking forward to discover a new corner of the country. We will be back on the West Coast this time, which we have last visited in 2018. This time we are returning to the beginning to the first road trip that we made back in 2015 which was a California road trip.
Now we are branching out and doing three different types of road trips in one. The first part is concentrated on Nevada and Las Vegas, the desert, Monument Valley and quaint towns in Colorado. The second part of the road trip is driving down Route 66 from Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Kingsman, Needles all the way to California. For the third and final part, we are doing a South California road trip that includes visiting San Diego, Oceanside, Laguna Beach and the rest of Orange County. Then we will head north towards Santa Barbara and finish our road trip in Los Angeles.
Much of the road trip has already been booked and planned, but I want to come here and make this announcement in order to ask if you have any tips and suggestions for us on what we should see in which places we should visit. I will give you a list of places that we plan to visit as well as a general road trip map so any suggestion will be welcomed. Mostly, I’m looking for insider tips and places off the beaten path and places that are not on major tourist brochures and websites. Restaurants, cafes and bars are also needed. So thank you in advance for helping me out.
Part One: Las Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park, Springdale, Kanab, Page, Oljato-Monument Valley, Cortez, Durango
Part Two: Route 66, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Kingman, Needles, Barstow
Part Three: San Diego, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles

ReplyDeleteIt's becoming a reality by the day!
DeleteI think you have it covered! Have a great trip-- And a safe one!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bill
DeleteHappy travels! and looking forward to you photos :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteThis sounds like a great road trip. I don't think old highway 66 is continuous any more, but there are still great sights along the old route.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. In some places it merges or is overthrown by the new highway system.
DeleteMersad your itunerary makes me healous! You will see so mnay wonderful areas. I only visited Durango, Colorado once, but it was to rede on the historic narrow gage Durnago to Silverton railroad. It has a long history form the gold mine days but is now passengers only. I stood in the semi-open railcar the entire trip taking photos of the scenery--the mountains and the Animas River. I'd suggest taking iit one way, from Durango to the mining town of Silverton. Then take the bus back as it is faster. You can book it that way. There is an opportunity to see Silverton for an hour or so before boarding the bus back to Durnago. Another spectacular dive in the area is highway CO 550 nicknamed "the Million Dollar Highway" as it winds around the San Juan Mountains on a narrow paved road with ni guardrails, Some find it a bit scaryto drive but we did it x2 and loved it! You drive from Durango to the town of Ouray on it. In fall the ride is spectacular as the aspen trees are all golden yellow. Ouray is a scenic old mining town and not too far from Telluride--a popular ski
ReplyDeletearea for SW Colorado. If I think of more I'll let you know!
Thank you for your detailed description! I was hoping to hear from you since I love your Colorado photos. I don't think we will have time for the milion dollar highway drive, but the railroad could be interesting. I heard about it, the only problem is that we arrive in town in the afternoon and leave the next morning, so I don't think we will have time for that either. :(
DeleteOh what fun lies ahead for you ! So much to see and do in those areas. We love roadtrips and I enjoy sharing yours virtually. Looking forward. Thanks for hosting.

Thank you for visiting
DeleteCertainly looks like a massive roadtrip. Enjoy and safe travels.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! Australia is on our list too!
DeleteWe are beach fans. I'd recommend stops at all these beautiful beaches - Coronado Beach, Carlsbad, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, even touristy Venice Beach!
ReplyDeleteFor museums, The Getty Museum in both Malibu and L.A. is free and is excellent!
For shopping, Fashion Island in Newport Beach, and Rodeo Drive is a must stop. Traffic to the latter is horrible, so plan accordingly.
I had lunch near the CalTech (Ca Institute of Technology) campus, and it was lovely. I'd suggest spending some time walking around the campus.
If you're looking for authentic Chinese food like dim sum and others, go to the San Gabriel/Arcadia area.
Safe travels!
Thank you so much! All of those sound great. I will look into all of them (some I know of already). CalTech sounds interesting.
DeleteForgot to mention See's Candies; it's the only candy I like. There is a store in Santa Monica, and elsewhere in CA. A perfect and special souvenir/gift to bring home!
ReplyDeleteNoted!
DeleteLooks like a very nice trip. If you come up to the Bay, I will buy you a lunch. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
