The Old Bridge in Mostar at Dawn

The Old Bridge in Mostar bathing in the golden rays of the afternoon sun. The Old Bridge and It's Area are part of UNESCO's World Heritage List. It was constructed in the year 1566 and the building was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent. The goal was to replace an older wooden suspension bridge of dubious stability.

Upon its completion it was the widest man-made arch in the world. Certain associated technical issues remain a mystery: how the scaffolding was erected, how the stone was transported from one bank to the other, how the scaffolding remained sound during the long building period. As a result, this bridge can be classed among the greatest architectural works of its time.

  1. Oh wow! That is quite an accomplishment. It never ceases to amaze me how bridges were built before modern technology. What a beautiful photo! We have nothing like that here in Virginia. :(

  2. What a gorgeous old building and bridge! The emerald green water, the bridge and the blue sky, those contrast is perfect! Thank you for sharing!

  3. Enchanting is the only word I can think of to describe your bridge. It has such an elegant arch, the soft sun on the bricks of the bridge building adds warmth to the incredible cold colour of the river. Amazing that it was built so long ago and that the methods remain a mystery.

  6. Reminds me very much of Ponte Vecchio in Florence, it. Originally built in 996 of wood and stone, destroyed, rebuilt, destroyed rebuilt.... One standing today built in 1345. They are truly wonders.

  7. The is probably one of the most beautiful bridge photos I have ever seen. I would love to be able to paint it. I am working on one of Scotland's famous bridges. It is slow work as I just cannot get the feel I want. I will keep on trying that is for sure.
