As my summer vacation continued, I found myself enjoying Umag where i was stationed, more and more. While Umag is known for its laid-back vibe, scenic promenade, and summer festivals, one place stood out and truly shaped my experience: a beachside restaurant called La Capannina. This wasn’t just any restaurant, it became a little happy place for me. I dined there four times over the course of my stay, always drawn back by its perfect blend of Italian flair, Japanese finesse, and Adriatic charm. It's right next to the beach where I was during the day, so i just dried off and hopped in for dinner after I was done swimming.
La Capannina is perched right at the edge of the sea, with tables set to catch every last ray of the setting sun. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, where you sip a chilled drink and watch the horizon turn shades of tangerine and lavender. And in a quirky, endearing twist, some of the chairs are occupied by teddy bears, plush companions that add a touch of whimsy to the evening. The food is as memorable as the view. While I sampled a generous portion of the menu, from delicious pizza to delicately grilled seafood, what stole my heart was the sushi. Fresh, artfully presented, and balanced in flavor, it was some of the best I’ve had in Croatia. Each visit brought something new: a different roll to try, a slightly different hue to the sunset, and the feeling of slowly falling in love with this little corner of the Istrian coast.
If you’re ever in Umag, don’t skip La Capannina. Go for the food, stay for the view, and maybe share your table with a teddy bear.
