Visiting Malmo in Sweden [Through My Lens Nr. 167]

Before we embark on our Copenhagen travel series, there is one city I have to show you first, and that's Malmo in Sweden. Only a short train ride (and the Oresund Bridge) separates Malmo from Copenhagen, so it only makes sense to stop there as well. Malmo was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns of Scandinavia. Since the construction of the Oresund Bridge, Malmo has undergone a major transformation with architectural developments, and it has attracted new IT companies. It is a very quiet city, though the third-largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the sixth-largest city in Scandinavia. Malmo is a young city, with almost half of the population under the age of 35.

A simple walk through the city center will show you the most prominent sights of Malmo. From the twist tower in the north to the wonderful Malmo city library in the southwest of the city. Malmo has a great Central station from which you can easily travel to Copenhagen as well as the rest of Sweden. A bus stop in front of the station also features regular lines to the Malmo Airport.

Malmo oldest building is St. Peter's Church. It was built in the early 14th century. The church is built with a nave, two aisles, a transept and a tower. Its exterior is characterized above all by the flying buttresses spanning its airy arches over the aisles and ambulatory. The tower, which fell down twice during the 15th century, got its current look in 1890. During my visit the church was being renovated so I couldn't go inside.

Another amazing sight in the city is the Malmo City Library. It consists of three buildings. "The Calendar of light" was designed by the Danish architect Henning Larsen. Then there is a small castle on the east side, which was originally going to be a museum. These two main buildings are linked by a building called "The Cylinder", where the entrance, an information desk, a return desk and a cafe are located. Inside the main library floor you will find an impressive selection of books, DVDs and CDs.
