A Rain-Kissed Evening in Dubrovnik

This past weekend, my mom, our faithful little Beni, and I took a short trip down the coast to Dubrovnik, where we reunited with cousins visiting all the way from Arizona. There’s something about meeting family in such a historic, story-filled city that makes the moments feel even more special, like the ancient stone walls themselves are witnesses to our laughter and conversations.

We gathered at Poklisar Restaurant, nestled right by the harbor. The setting could not have been more picturesque: bobbing boats and the rhythm of footsteps from the busy streets echoing through the old port. Over fresh seafood and local flavors, our table was filled with chatter, memories, and the joy of catching up with family we don’t see nearly often enough. Beni, as always, sat happily by our side, soaking up the attention and the gentle sea breeze.

As the evening stretched on, the skies suddenly opened. Rain began to fall softly, then more steadily, washing over the marble streets of Dubrovnik. In an instant, the bustling crowds of tourists scattered, leaving behind an almost surreal calm. The narrow alleyways glistened under the lantern light, and the city felt like it belonged only to us. Walking back through the near-empty Old Town, I felt as though Dubrovnik was revealing a quieter, more intimate side, one you rarely get to see in the summer months. With the rain tapping on umbrellas and the scent of the sea mixing with the freshness in the air, it was a perfect ending to our family evening.

What began as a simple dinner turned into one of those moments that linger in memory: family gathered from across the world, good food in a historic harbor, and a city that showed us its magic beneath the rain. Dubrovnik has a way of surprising you, and this weekend was proof that its beauty doesn’t just shine in the sun, it sparkles in the rain, too.
