February Nights [Through My Lens Nr. 518]

Mostar in early February is very quiet, and in-between seasons, when winter hasn’t fully left, and spring is only whispering. The first rainy nights don’t arrive dramatically. They slip in softly, with wet cobblestones, low clouds hugging the hills, and that familiar smell of stone and river air that only the Old Town seems to hold. I am yearning for the cold and sunny winter days. Rain seems to be too much sometimes.

On nights like this, the stone buildings feel alive. The rain darkens the limestone and everything turns richer, deeper browns, softer golds, warmer shadows. From above, the terraces and restaurants glow like little islands of light, tucked into the maze of rooftops. The empty chairs and tables look like they’re waiting for someone who just stepped inside to escape the drizzle. Even when it’s quiet, the Old Town never feels lonely just intimate.

Further down, the little stone bridge arches gently over the dark stream, like it has for centuries. The clouds hang low over the hills, and the minarets glow amber against the night sky.  The city lights scatter across the hillside like stars that decided to settle on earth instead. It’s the kind of view that makes you slow down without realizing it. Down in the narrow lanes, the cobblestones shine under the streetlamps. It’s such an ordinary moment, but it feels cinematic, with bare branches, yellow light, and soft mist in the air… everything slows the world down.
