March on the Buna River [Through My Lens Nr. 521]

The first days of March always carry a quiet transition, and nowhere is that shift more visible than at Bunski kanali. The landscape still holds traces of winter, bare shrubs, pale grasses, the cool sharpness in the air, yet the light has already changed. Standing above the rushing water, you can sense that the season is turning. It is not spring in full bloom yet, but it is no longer winter either. It is a threshold.

Located just south of Mostar, Bunski kanali is the dramatic confluence where the short but powerful Buna River meets the colder, emerald-toned Neretva River. What makes this place so visually striking is not merely the meeting of two rivers, but the way the Neretva is forced to split around a natural limestone barrier, creating narrow channels and restless rapids before the waters finally merge. The rock formations beneath the surface are ancient, sculpted over thousands of years by the steady force of flowing water in this distinctly karst landscape. The result is a scene that feels dynamic and alive, especially at the start of March when winter rains and mountain snowmelt often raise the water level and intensify the current.

The color of the water here never fails to capture attention. The Neretva carries that unmistakable turquoise clarity born in the mountains, while the Buna, though only around nine kilometers long, arrives with impressive strength from its powerful karst spring near Blagaj. The clarity is a testament to the geological character of Herzegovina’s rivers, shaped by porous limestone that filters and channels water through underground systems before releasing it back into the open.

Without the crowds of summer, the place feels expansive and contemplative, allowing the natural rhythm of the rivers to dominate. There is something grounding about standing there at this time of year. The air is fresh and cool enough to clear your thoughts, yet warm enough to hint at what is coming. The rivers do not pause between seasons; they continue forward, indifferent to calendars, carrying winter’s runoff toward the Adriatic.

March at Bunski kanali is not dramatic in the way of spring blossoms or summer heat. Instead, it is steady, reflective, and full of subtle promise. A visit now feels almost intimate, as if you are seeing the landscape in its raw form before the greenery returns. The scenery here invites you to pause, to observe, and to feel the quiet power of two rivers meeting at the edge of a changing season.
