Exploring Graz, Austria [Through My Lens Nr. 554]

Our trip to Graz was a getaway that felt less about ticking sights off a list and more about simply enjoying being together. I travelled with Beni (who celebrated his 18th Birthday), my mom, my sister Jasmina, the kids Mak and Isak, and the rest of the family, which naturally made the whole experience a little louder, busier, and much more memorable. Graz turned out to be the perfect setting for it: beautiful enough to keep us exploring, but relaxed enough to slow down whenever we felt like it.

We spent plenty of time wandering through Graz’s lovely historic centre, taking in the colourful facades, elegant old buildings and lively squares. The inner city has such an easygoing atmosphere, and we happily moved between sightseeing, little breaks and simply watching everyday life unfold around us. Of course, there was also time for some shopping along the city’s main shopping streets, with the occasional stop for coffee, an essential part of any good city trip.

One of the highlights was making our way up to the Schlossberg, the hill rising above the centre of Graz. From up there, the city opens up beneath you, with its red rooftops stretching in every direction. The famous Uhrturm, Graz’s Clock Tower, is even more charming in person and has become one of those images I immediately associate with the trip. Between the views, the paths around the fortress hill and the historic surroundings, it was easily one of my favourite parts of exploring the city.

Naturally, a family trip also revolves around food, and Graz treated us well. We enjoyed some delicious meals, plenty of coffee breaks and those long moments around the table when nobody is particularly in a hurry to leave. Travelling with Mak and Isak added its own energy to everything, while having Beni with us made this getaway feel even more complete.
More than anything, though, I will remember Graz as a really lovely family escape. It gave us a few days away from our everyday routines, time to explore somewhere new together and plenty of small moments that became part of the memory of the trip. And Graz itself was only part of the story. We also made a few excursions outside the city and discovered some beautiful places in the surrounding area. I’ll be sharing those little adventures in the upcoming posts.
