An Evening Walk through Gothenburg [Part 2]

The city of Gothenburg is not that big, but in every corner there is something to be found. This post will cover our evening walk through the south part of Gothenburg heading into the night where the warm lights of Liseberg Amusement Park would greet us. We left part one of with us leaving the Gothia Towers. Liseberg is right across the towers, but since we wanted to enter it at dusk, we decided to walk around and explore the surroundings of this part of the city. It was a very enjoyable walk, and at the end the sky cleared up and the sun gave me some warmth in the images as it was setting. I was really fascinated with the weather and how it was ever changing here in North Europe.

A Walk through South Gothenburg

South Gothenburg may not be high-end, but there are many imporant structures here. From churches to University buildings, there is a lot to be found here. We walked a small park to reach the city river. In the image above you can see the Vasa Church, peaking through the trees. The Vasa Church is located in the area of Vasastaden, between Hvitfeldtska gymnasiet and Vasaparken, the park we were walking through. It was founded in 1909 and is built in a Neo-Romanesque style.

In the image above you can see the bust of Swedish poet J.A. Wadman in the Vasaparken, while below is the neo-classical main building of City center university founded in 1954.

Visiting the Feskekörka

As the sun began to set we entered the river area where the fishmarket Feskekorka is located. A bridge took us to the other side and we went into this indoor fish market. It got its name from the building's resemblance to a Neo-gothic church. It opened on 1 November 1874, and was drawn by the city architect Victor von Gegerfelt. Feskekorka is an institution in Gothenburg as well as a tourist magnet, housing one of the city's oldest trades, fishing. Apart from a fish market, there is also a fish- and seafood restaurant in the building.

Walking into Liseberg

As the evening went on we reached the famous Liseberg Amusement Park. Open usually only during spring and summer, it opened its gates during the winter season to celebrate Christmas. Everything was decorated, and this is the only place in the city where Gothenburg goes all out to celebrate the season. Lights are everywhere, people are roaming the park and many games, restaurants and attractions can be found here.

I will stop our exploration of Liseberg at this point and will keep the rest of the story for the next part, since I have so many images that it would be too much if I would go on here. So stay tuned for more from this winter wonderland.
