Day trip to Makarska [Through My Lens Nr. 228]

Situated in the Split-Dalmatia County, Makarska has long been an administrative, political, economic, cultural and educational center, and since the mid- 20th century, a tourist center as well. Today, it is a city with more than 15 thousand inhabitants that also encompasses picturesque villages at the foot of the Biokovo Mountain under which the town resides. Makarska is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the Croatian coast, attractive for its nature and climate, diverse tourist offer and hospitable hosts. The town has always been well known for its sand and pebble beach, which is almost 2 km long. Various tourist facilities, comfortable hotels and catering facilities that offer culinary specialties are all lined along the promenades surrounded by pine trees, and there is plenty of entertainment for both children and adults. Makarska is located at the foot of the Biokovo mountain range, which protects the city from the harsh continental climate. It has a lush Mediterranean vegetation, mild winters and long and warm summers with a refreshing wind maestral.

Pictured above is the Andrija Kacic Miosic Square, the largest town square, with his monument placed in the center, is located near the waterfront in the centre of Makarska. A variety of entertainment and other events take place in the square. It is named after the most significant poet, not only of the Makarska Riviera, but also of the entire Dalmatia. He is the author of the most popular book in Dalmatia, which has so far undergone 64 editions, "Pleasant Conversation of the Slavic People".

There are many restaurants and bars located along the promenade. The Hotel Biokovo offers great fish dishes as well as pizzas from a brick stone oven. Even during winter, when there are no tourists you can still find visitors from the surrounding towns and cities that come to enjoy a warm day here. It's perfect for a walk and day trip, even during the winter months.
