Winter at the Beach [Through My Lens Nr. 227]

Most beachgoers only visit the beach in the summer when the conditions are great for tanning and swimming, mild wind, warm water, high temperatures, and strong sun. However, not all beach-goers are fair-weather fans. Many people visit year-round and will have noticed that a beach looks very different in winter and summer. While people put on more layers (of clothes) on throughout the winter, beaches have their layers (of sand) taken off. The size of the sand particles carried offshore in any time period will largely depend on wave energy because larger particles require more energy to be moved. As a result, the sand composition of a beach in winter will be much coarser than in summer when finer and medium-grain sands predominate. The wide summer beaches we love, change drastically in winter, but usually all, or most, of the offshore sand is returned to the beach in spring and summer, unless storms move it to deeper water! I love visiting beaches and the seaside during the winter season. These images were taken on the Makarksa riviera, on a walking path between the towns of Zaostrog and Drvenik.

Thank you all for joining me in another week of "Through My Lens". I am looking forward to your submissions this week. I hope you will have a good one!

  2. Thanks for hosting Mersad. You’ve been in Oregon, so perhaps you know that beaches there can be chilly even in the summer! But sometimes lovely in Winter. You just never know. Here in Florida it is the land of endless summer. (I actually prefer the changeable beaches of the Pacific to this one.). Your winter beach is beautiful.

  3. As a kid I only liked the beach during the summer so I could swim but as an adult I also appreciate it in the off season for how beautiful it is....when we lived in San Diego we'd spend a lot of time at a resort in Rosarito Mexico during the winter....we would have the whole place practically to ourselves! Beautiful pictures!
