Autumn on the Balcony [Through My Lens Nr. 549]

There is always a moment in September when summer still feels very much alive, but the light begins to change. The afternoons remain warm, the trees are still green, and yet there is something softer and more golden about the sun. That is usually my cue to start changing the balcony with the season. This year I wanted the transition into autumn to feel warm rather than dramatic. Instead of completely changing the space, I kept the balcony itself simple and added a few seasonal details in shades of burnt orange, pumpkin, mustard and warm brown. The result feels noticeably autumnal without losing the relaxed atmosphere that makes this one of my favourite corners of the apartment.

The easiest transformation came from textiles. An orange throw across the dark outdoor sofa immediately warmed up the seating area, while the plaid cushions introduced those classic autumn colours without making everything overly themed. Against the charcoal grey furniture, the oranges stand out beautifully, especially when the afternoon sunlight reaches the balcony. I also added autumn leaves to the flower boxes and along the window ledge. They are probably the most obvious seasonal element, but I like the way they frame the balcony from inside the apartment. Looking through the glass doors now feels almost like looking into a small autumn room rather than simply an outdoor space.

Pumpkins appear throughout the balcony in small doses: on the side table, beside the candles and among the leaves. I deliberately kept them relatively understated. Combined with large white candles, lanterns and a few flowers in muted pink and burgundy tones, they create a softer version of autumn décor rather than turning the balcony into a Halloween display. One of my favourite little details is the basket beside the sofa with a mustard-coloured blanket tucked inside. It is decorative now, while the days are still warm, but in a few weeks it will probably become much more practical. There is something particularly nice about sitting outside on a cool autumn evening wrapped in a blanket while the lights above the balcony begin to glow.

And those string lights are perhaps what make the space work best once the sun goes down. During the day, the balcony is bright, warm and filled with the colours of early autumn. In the evening, the lights, candles and darker furniture turn it into a much cosier space. What I like most is that none of this feels like saying goodbye to summer. In Mostar, September often gives us plenty of sunshine and warm afternoons, so the balcony can still be used almost exactly as it was during July and August. The difference is simply in the mood. Summer was about greenery, long evenings and bright colours; now the same space feels calmer, softer and a little more intimate. For now, it is that perfect in-between season: sunshine through the windows, orange leaves along the balcony, a pumpkin or two on the table, and the promise of cooler evenings just around the corner.
