The season has not quite surrendered to autumn yet, and the Old Town still carries the warmth, noise and rhythm of summer, only softened slightly by the changing light. The days remain warm, the stone still holds the heat long after midday, and the Neretva continues to cut through the city in its unmistakable shades of green and blue. Yet by September, everything feels a little less hurried. The intensity of July and August begins to fade, and Mostar seems to settle into a gentler version of itself. Around the Old Bridge, summer is still very much alive. Visitors line the bridge, stopping for photographs or leaning over the stone walls to look down toward the river. From below, the bridge feels even more impressive, rising above the Neretva in that perfect single arch that has become inseparable from the image of Mostar itself.
Down by the river, the atmosphere is different. People sit on the rocks, swim in the cold water and wait for the familiar spectacle of divers preparing to jump. Boats move through the river beneath the bridge while groups gather along the banks, looking upward toward the diving platforms and the crowds above. It is one of those scenes that captures Mostar perfectly: centuries-old architecture towering over a riverbank full of swimmers, tourists, locals, cameras and summer noise.
What I love most about this time of year is the contrast. Mostar can still feel crowded and lively, particularly around the bridge, but only a few steps away there are quieter views of the river, hidden terraces and rocky corners where the season seems to move at a slower pace. You can hear the river below, the occasional cheers from the bridge, the sounds of cafes and restaurants drifting through the Old Town, and somewhere in between it all, the city feels completely itself.
Late summer in Mostar is not really about saying goodbye to summer. It is more like holding onto it for just a little longer. The heat is still here, people are still swimming in the Neretva, the bridge is still crowded and the terraces are still full, but there is already a hint that the season is beginning to change. And perhaps that is exactly what makes these September days in the Old Town so memorable they feel temporary, warm and beautifully suspended between two seasons.
