Sunset in Black and White

I am breaking the pattern of Budapest posts, to do something for this weeks Friday My Town Shoot Out. This shot was taken in 2009, and you may have seen the place in my recent posts here. This weeks theme is black and white landscpaes, and since I already did a tutorial on this I thouhgt I would just include a small tip in this post.

Black and white conversion of daylight images, work best when the colored shot has been taken during sunset or sunrise. In the example below, the soft light translates well to the black and white, giving enough depth and detail, without harsh shadows.

Which image works better for you?

Update: The last two parts of the Budapest Series will be posted on Sunday and Monday, and they include some really great shots of the city, including an underground church in the middle of Budapest!

  1. Difficult to say.. as I like them both.
You did an excellent job converting color to black and white...
I may be leaning toward the black and white.
Have a great weekend, my friend.

  2. Normally I gravitate toward color but black and white frequently are more dramatic. I much prefer the B&W.

  4. I love color but I have to say the black and white is beautiful....I hope you have a wonderful weekend....

  5. I really love both of the images. But the scene for some reason looks awesome in B&W.

Well done, happy weekend to you!

sehr coole Aufnahmen ... ich kann mich gar nicht richtig entscheiden, welche mir besser gefällt !? Farbe ... s/w .... Es ist irgendwie doch wie immer... Ich stehe total auf s/w !!!

  7. There seems to be a depth in the b/w that is not in the color. But the color shows the shadows better and gives dimension to the photo. I think I choose the color here.

  8. normally I would choose for color, but in this case I like them both.
    thanks for your great tip!

  10. I like it both ways - The colored version is so cheerful, but the B&W version is also striking - it gives off a whole different mood.

  11. I really enjoy black and white photography. I like the B&W version here, but I think often times when you have both versions side by side it makes it more difficult to choose because both have their strong points. People who prefer color will usually choose that version. Showing B&W photos by themselves gives them a fair shake. But again, I'm biased toward B&W photography. And not all photos work in black and white.

I couldn't reply to your comment on my blog via email. I got the "noreply-comment" thing. I have a Google+ account, but wasn't using it as my Blogger profile and the auto-enhance feature was still affecting my blog photos. After I turned it off, I had no more issues. If you have a Google+ account, it would be worth a try even if your G+ and Blogger accounts aren't connected. Go to Settings in G+ and scroll down to the photo settings section. You'll see options for "auto-enhance". I hope it works for you because I know how frustrated I was with my photos looking degraded after loading them into a post.

    1. Thank you for your detailed answer. I have a Google+ profile, and I found the auto enhance feature you mentioned and turned it off. I think the images immediately upgraded, because they look better now. Thank you so much!

  12. Mersad, I can't compare these two images. They have a different mood and I love this mood in both of them. First image is very sunny, very colorful; it makes you want to see this place this moment. The black and white image is timeless, classic and more honest. It makes you think about history and then to visit this place.

Excellent photographs, excellent idea to show them in two different versions.

Best wishes for new coming week, Mersad!

  14. I love the color shot Mersad, but it is probably because everything here is SO gray these days! Such a fascinating old castle, I'd love to be able to visit there! Your captures are the next best thing! Hope you're enjoying your weekend!

  15. The sky sure looks overcast without definition of clouds. The walls seem to have a very different texture to them in black and white.

  16. Auch wenn ich beide Aufnahmen schön finde, für mich ist s/w bei diesem Motiv irgendwie ausdrucksstärker.

Wünsche dir ein schönes Wochenende und sende herzliche Abendgrüsse

  17. Loving the B & W. Great post and very well done site!

  18. I was by earlier but didn't leave a note, wanted to see them twice. I am going to put a small hole in Mr king's comment. I love color (in my photos)and B&W have not really interested me. But in these two photos I prefer the B&W. For me in the color photo the blue sky dominates, drawing the eye away from the castle, the stones and the shadows. Even on the B &W I probably would have cut some of the sky out (right or wrong). That all said I love them both

    1. Interesting notion. I personally love deep blue skies, I guess that's why I framed it that way.

    2. That is the beauty of being the artist. There is no arguing with the artist interpretation of the subject being photographed - it is his and his alone. I am waiting for the rest of Budapest. Oh maybe I am on the wrong page.....

    3. But i also think that there is no arguing with your opinion. The images are there for all, and I wouldn't ever tell anyone how to interpret them. :)

  19. Both images are quite nice. I lean toward the color image as my favorite, but I would make a choice after knowing where I would want to use it or hang it.

  20. I wonder if it's because the colour in the sky is so intense that I feel disappointed with the black and white sky? Or maybe it would look better with a cloud or two. However, I do prefer the b & w, it looks more realistic to me somehow, and I notice the textures more. Thanks for the illustration, Mersad.

    1. A cloud or two would add more drama to the black and white version.
