Walk in the Mountains [Part 3/3]: Wilderness of Prenj

We are finishing up our stay in the mountains, but before we depart I want to show you the most interesting part of our hike in this third part of images. This mountain range is known for its natural beauty. We drove with the car as far as we could into the mountains so that our hike on the roads could be as long as possible and so that we could see most of everything. The road was pretty beat up and my car just managed to swirl along and keep up with the many bumps and holes. The sights made up for it.

This is a multi-part photo series. Other parts include:
Part One: Through the Forest
Part Two: A New Path
Part Three: Wilderness of Prenj

The mountain Prenj has been described in many books as the "Bosnian Himalaya". Himalayan veterans should treat this comparison with caution. Nonetheless to Bosnian mountaineers Prenj is definitely the most special: rich in mountaineering history, endemic species, and providing the largest variety of mountaineering challenges. Of course our hike did not fall into that category.

It's relief is one of the most exciting in the region. There dominate sharp and elegant peaks, impressive ridges, beautiful valleys and other amazing alp-likes forms. Prenj massif has at least 11 peaks over 2000m of which one, Windy Peak, was climbed first time in October 2003, probably as one of Europe's last virgin 2000m peak.

Sights of some peaks of Prenj.

Along the way I spotted this old building. I think it might have been a wood shed or some sort of storage facility. Now the roof is gone, and only the outer walls remain. Though I'm still wondering who it belongs to, since there are no houses here. Not close by at least.

Some close ups of the nature here show fall creeping up, though it will be a few more days until the peak of fall is here.

As we arrived back at our car it was already 2 in the afternoon, and that lunch back at the mountain cottage was calling out to us. The dogs were pretty tired too from all the walking. Yeah, we were ready to head back home.

Before we arrived back to the mountain cottages we actually saw them from the mountain roads. I zoomed in as much as I could to take a picture of ours. The fall foliage was more prominent here as the houses were nestled comfortably in the foothills of mountain Prenj.

I hope you enjoyed this three-part adventure through the mountains. Has fall arrived in your corner of the world?
The End

  3. The views of the mountain peaks are beautiful, indeed. But my favorite here is that tree, with the amazing root system clinging desperately to the side of the cliff. That one tiny purple flower adds interest to that shot as well.

  11. Gorgeous scenery and a lovely day for a hike in the mountains. Fall has arrived here - the trees are coloured and losing their leaves and the rain is beginning to fall.
