Life rarely changes all at once. More often, it shifts quietly, like the way one season slides into the next. Summer doesn’t end with a snap instead, evenings grow cooler, shadows lengthen, and the air takes on a softness that hints at what’s coming. It feels that way in Mostar now. In that in-between space, between warmth and crispness, between light and early darkness, when Beni and I stroll around the neighborhood, we can find a mirror for the turning points in our own lives. Trees surrender their leaves not in defeat but in preparation. The act of letting go creates room for rest and renewal. In the same way, life asks us to release things, from relationships, jobs, identities, to habits. All those things that once defined us but no longer serve who we’re becoming. What feels like loss can actually be an opening.
Autumn is the season of gathering what has grown. Fields are harvested, fruits are picked, and the results of months of care are revealed. Our own turning points often arrive with this same invitation: pause, look back, and see what we’ve cultivated. Sometimes we find abundance, sometimes lessons, but always something worth carrying forward.Summer teaches us to live outwardly, soaking in energy and light. Autumn, however, reminds us that change is not only inevitable but essential. Life’s transitions, whether chosen or unexpected, carry the same truth as the falling leaves: change is part of the cycle, and it can be embraced instead of feared. Where summer calls us to move, autumn encourages us to breathe. Its slower rhythm invites balance, introspection, and care for the self. Turning points in life often feel overwhelming, but if we mirror the season and allow ourselves to slow down, we create space to align with what truly matters. Things change. It's inevitable.
The fading of long summer days might feel bittersweet, but autumn replaces them with golden light, cozy evenings, and deeper connections. Life, too, often requires an ending before it offers a beginning. Every turning point is less a final destination and more a threshold, a crossing into the next version of who we are. Perhaps the greatest lesson autumn gives us is that nothing ends forever. Every leaf that falls feeds the soil for spring’s rebirth. Every turning point in our lives, however disruptive it feels in the moment, is simply part of a greater cycle, a chance to shed, rest, and eventually bloom again.
