Visiting Riegersburg Castle in Austira [Through My Lens Nr. 337]

I will start with my posts from our recent road trip to Austria. In this first post, we'll be looking back at our visit to the Riegersburg Castle. It was built on a hill which had once been an ancient volcano. The peak is at 482 meters above sea level. The ancient basalt of the hill was used to build the castle. We drove up there one hot Wednesday morning. The whole family was there (except for Beni who rested in our Airbnb apartment). The castle is owned by the Princely Family of Liechtenstein, who live down the village in a house. The castle serves as a museum, with 25 out of the 108 rooms being opened for visiting. Sixteen of the rooms show the history of Riegersburg Castle and nine deal with witches and sorcerers.

We had lunch in the same named place, Riegersburg in the Lasslhof restaurant. It's such a quiet and wonderful place to be. Mostly because it was mid week before the booming tourist season. You can get to the castle in two ways, by walking up the hill, through the vineyard or by taking the funicular. We took the funicular because we were there with Mak's stroller.

You can purchase three kinds of tickets. One too visit the outer walls, yards and roads, a second one to see the castle and a third one which also includes a flight demonstration by the Birds of Prey Observatory during the demonstration times.
